June ProGen Study Group Update

I’m still feeling a little out of sorts even after being home a week. Still getting caught up on things. ProGen keeps moving along though and that is one thing I have focused on the past week.

Our May assignment was to read about Accreditation and Certification. Our practical assignment was to use the transcript of a document we created in April and submit a statement identifying a research focus. Then we analyzed the data and created a research plan.

Now that June has arrived we are learning about Evidence Analysis. We read a chapter in the Professional Genealogy book and Chapter 1 of Evidence Explained.  My reading is done but I need to work on the assignment which is to select an individual I have been researching and list documents I have for that individual and my analysis of those documents. We will write proof arguments in the future.

I may select James Shannon, a man I have been working on for a friend. I found a lot of information on his family while I was in Missouri in May. It will be exciting and maybe I’ll discover something I overlooked in my initial research and review of documents.

Tuesday’s Tip – Visit the Springfield, Missouri Library

Do you have southwest Missouri roots? Have you checked out the Springfield, Missouri, main branch of their library system? The library has a huge room full of genealogy materials for not only Missouri but other states. There are shelves of family histories and Missouri county histories and resources.

I visited the library a week ago and while I had limited time, was able to locate a lot of good information. The Genealogy and Local History section is a large open room with plenty of tables with lamps and electrical outlets for researchers. Research librarians were available to answer questions and the Ozarks Genealogical Society had a section of information.

Check them out the next time you are in Greene County, Missouri and need to do some Missouri research.

Wisdom Wednesday – Visit Ozarks Genealogical Society Library

Last week I spent some time at the Ozarks Genealogical Society Library.  While the building does not look large, it is packed with information. I was only there about an hour and a half but barely touched the collection.

The library has many county history books for not only Missouri but other states. There are many cemetery and obituary transcription books and rows of filing cabinets that I did not have a chance to look through.

I hope to get back there tomorrow or Thursday but we’ll see how this stormy southwest Missouri weather shakes out. Not sure I want to be caught out in a tornado around here especially after what happened in Joplin yesterday.

High Prairie Mo      June 24, 1891

We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law we have carefully examined this applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following disability, incurred in the service, viz: Injury to right leg, Disease of lungs, eyes, heart, kidneys and stomach.

He makes the following statement upon which he bases his claim for Original

About 17 years ago my right thigh was fractured and my right hip is out of place. I have pain in left breast all the time. I have no disease of kidney or stomach that I know of

Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: Pulse rate, 84; respiration, 20; temperature, 99; height, 5 feet 9 inches; weight, 156 pounds; age, 55 years. Injury to right leg result of fracture of thigh & surgical neck of femur, 2 1/2 inches shortening. Lamness & limited motion. No evidence of disease of lungs, eyes, heart, kidneys, or stomach. No other disability found. disability permanent and not result of viscous habits and incapacitated for manual labor 3/4

He is, in our opinion, entitled to a 10/18 rating for the disability caused by injury to right leg & hips for that caused……..
