Maritime Monday – U.S.A.T. Sea Quail Smooth Log

My grandfather also sailed on the U.S.A.T. Sea Quail 9 September 1944 – 13 January 1945.  The men worked on the ship before leaving port. I am unsure if it was a new ship or they were preparing it for another long sail.  On 20 September 1944 the log reports “DEPARTED MOBILE, AL FOR TRIAL RUN.”

This ship left from the port of New Orleans, LA and sailed to Mobile, AL to Ambrose Light, NY, to Newburgh, NY. From there it sailed to Jersey City, NJ, then Staten Island, NY. They left NY on 7 November 1944 on a voyage in a convoy of 36 ships to England.  They arrived Southampton, England on 18 November 1944. From there they sailed to St. Helen’s Road back to Newport News, VA.

After some time in port, the ship set sail again for Naples, Italy, arriving 22 December 1944. They departed Naples on the 25th and set sail for Mers-El-Kabir, Algeria, then on to Oran, Algeria then arrived back in New York, NY 11 January 1945 where my grandfather was detached from duty on this ship along with Crane, Leystra, Mains, Rouch and Stewart.

Maritime Monday – S.S. Joshua Hendy Smooth Log

My grandfather, Joseph J. Holik served in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard toward the end of World War II. Below is a list of the Armed Guard Log Crew List 8 May 1944 for the S.S. Joshua Hendy.  During the time my grandfather was on this ship, he sailed from New Orleans, LA to Ensenada, Puerto Rico. From there to Guyanilla to Guantanamo, Cuba.

14 June 1944 the ship was docked in Stuyvesant dock for dry dock and repairs according to the Armed Guard Log dated 14 June 1944.  On 22 June 1944 the following men were assigned to the ship:

Amanuensis Monday – Frank Kokoska World War II

April 23, 1944

Dear Mother and Dad:

Good morning and how is everybody today. A few lines to let you know that I am in good health and hope you are the same. I am writing to let you know that I am buying a $18.75 war bond every month. It will be taken out of my pay like that $60.00 check you get every month. The bond will be made out to me but will be sent to you every month. And mother I put your name down as Co. Owner of every bond that is sent to you.

The first bond will be taken out of my pay at the end of that month. And every month after that you will get a war bond. I figured I might just as well be buying bonds as spending that money. That will leave me still 35 dollars a month to spend after you get the 60 dollar check and the bond every month. Tis all for now so say hello to the gang for me and good luck to you all. Until the next letter as always your Son.

Tombstone Tuesday – Winkler

This grave is for my cousin Frank Winkler. It should be noted his stone says 129th Infantry when in fact that is an error. It should be 29th Infantry.
