Military Monday – James E. Shannon Civil War Pension File Outline

I recently received the Pension File for James E. Shannon and sorted it by date and created an outline of the file. This is what is included.

23 Dec 1890         Soldier’s Application Declaration for Invalid Pension

This is the first time James applies for a pension. He states he is 55 years old and ¾ unable to do his job as a farmer due to being crippled. Document provides his military service information. James signed this document. This is two pages long.

15 June 1891        Military Service Slip

Slip lists his military service information for the Bureau of Pensions.

16 June 1891        War Department Record and Pension Division Slip

Slip states James E. Shannon was enrolled in the military May 16, 1863 and M.G. (?) Aug 20, 1865

24 June 1891        Surgeon’s Certificate

This document is two pages long and states James E. Shannon was an Applicant for Original Pension Claim 975223. Date of Examination June 24, 1891. States his current post office is High Prairie, MO. Cause of disability is described. A brief statement about how the injury was received. James stated it occurred about 17 years ago making it around 1874. A full description of the exam is given. It is stated he is entitled to a 10/18 rating for the disability.

Two page statement given about James E. Shannon’s military service. Affidavit created in Webster County, Missouri.

30 April 1892       General Affidavit

Two page affidavit created in Webster County, Missouri explaining his accident and resulting disability.

30 Sept 1892        Miscellaneous Slips for Pension

Lists James E. Shannon’s name, current post office, service information, enlistment, discharge and pension application filing dates. Two pages.

27 Mar 1895         Department of Interior Bureau of Pensions

Three page document stating a reduction of pension is to be issued. James E. Shannon will not receive a rate higher than $8. Page 2 states a rate of $12 per month was in effect as of Dec 26, 1890. This was approved Oct 20, 1892. Page 3 states his official reduction to $8 per month.

Questionnaire about James’s marriage and children. Provides wife’s name, marriage date and place and children’s names and dates of birth.

28 Feb 1907         Declaration for Pension

Two pages, a cover and Declaration page identifying James E. Shannon and his military service. Describes his person and occupation. Lists places he lived after the Civil War. Lists two witnesses vouching for James E. Shannon, A.S. Morton and W.M. Morton, both Marshfield residents.

15 July 1907         Act of February 6, 1907 Slip

Slip, envelope and Reissue document authorizing the pension rate to go up to $15 per month. Also includes a page listing his military service.

17 July 1907         War Department, Adjutant General’s Office Commissioner of Pensions Slip
