NGS Home Study Course Lesson 1 (CD1)

on January 5, 2011

I received my NGS (National Genealogical Society) HSC CD 1 at the end of 2010 and started right away with the lessons. Lesson 1 is complete and on its way to be graded. This lesson was about getting started and learning how to create a pedigree chart and family group sheet. The family group sheet had to be, of course, sourced completely for each fact listed. While I have almost 15 years of research under my belt, it made me go back and look at some of the sources I had in my database from years ago and edit them to fit a correct format. The course recommends Elizabeth Shown Mills’ book Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, which I own.

Now, on to Lesson 2!

  1. As time goes on, I wonder how much of what we “completed” as research would hold up under the scrutiny of the experience and education we’ve picked up since.
