I received my NGS (National Genealogical Society) HSC CD 1 at the end of 2010 and started right away with the lessons. Lesson 1 is complete and on its way to be graded. This lesson was about getting started and learning how to create a pedigree chart and family group sheet. The family group sheet had to be, of course, sourced completely for each fact listed. While I have almost 15 years of research under my belt, it made me go back and look at some of the sources I had in my database from years ago and edit them to fit a correct format. The course recommends Elizabeth Shown Mills’ book Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, which I own.
Now, on to Lesson 2!

As time goes on, I wonder how much of what we “completed” as research would hold up under the scrutiny of the experience and education we’ve picked up since.
I’m sure many of my early links from 8+ years ago need to be reworked according to ESM’s “Evidence” book. That is something I will spend time on this year, reworking old source citations.
